Vasectomy Reversal Alternatives
There is a chance that men who made the decision to have a vasectomy will change their minds a few years after the procedure has already been done. In most cases they have remarried and wish to have children with their new wife. It is possible to do this without resorting to a complex surgery such as a vasectomy reversal – which might not be effective.
Sperm Bank
Using a sperm bank is one of the most effective vasectomy reversal alternatives for men. Most men will save some of their sperm before they have the vasectomy done in case they change their mind about having children. Your doctor can remove the sperm from your vas deferens or testicles and store it at a special clinic or other facility for a later date. If you decide to have more children you will use in vitro fertilization to place the sperm inside of the woman. The success rate for this is between 20% to 30%.
Donor Insemination
Donor insemination is a process in which you decide to use a sperm donor to help you and your wife have a baby. This is great to use if you do not mind using someone else’s sperm and it is very effective. You will be able to choose the sperm from a long list of donors. The woman will then have the sperm artificially inseminated into her uterus or cervix. The success rate for this is between 5% to 25%.
Sperm Aspiration
This is similar to a sperm bank except that the sperm is removed from your epididymus or testes years after the vasectomy procedure has been performed. The sperm will then be used along with the in vitro fertilization method or the intracytoplasmic sperm injection. There are two methods used to retrieve the sperm; percutaneous epididymus and testicular sperm extraction.
The percutaneous epididymus involved the doctor removing the sperm through the epididymus using a fine needle. The needle will puncture through to the skin and pull out the liquid containing the sperm. Testicular sperm extraction is a process in which a biopsy needle is used to remove a small piece from the testes that should contain a small amount of sperm. Sperm aspiration has a success rate between 20% to 35%.
