Vasectomy Complications
A vasectomy is a medical procedure and as such there are certain complications that might occur. It is important to understand what these complications are and how they are caused before you make the final decision to go through with the vasectomy. If you would like more details of these complications you should sit down and speak with your doctor.
Chronic Orchialagia
This is one of the rare complications that might occur. It causes a dull pain or even an ache inside of the testicles. This will happen when dead sperm and fluid is blocked inside of the epididymus. This condition will usually clear up within six months of the vasectomy.
Epididymitis
This is one of the more common complications that occurs when the largest tube that is situated behind the testicle and is connected to the vas has become inflamed and swollen. When this occurs the best way to treat it is to apply heat to it and to use anti-inflammatory medication and possibly even antibiotics.
Hematoma
This is a condition that is caused when there is bleeding inside of the scrotum. This condition usually appears after the first week following the procedure and can cause pain and swelling. Although most cases of hematoma are not considered serious you should still speak with your doctor if you have it.
Immune System Reaction
After the procedure is finished the immune system might misread the absorbed sperm cells as foreign proteins. When this happens they will create antibodies to fight them off. For most men this is not a serious condition. For others it might clog the arteries and induce a heart attack.
Infection
In less then 5% of all vasectomy procedures an infection may occur at the incision or underneath the tissue. This usually occurs when blood has collected in this area and must be treated with antibiotic medicine and antimicrobial creams. It will clear up within the week.
Sexual Intercourse Problems
Many people will attest to the fact that they are able to have a more exciting and spontaneous sex life after the procedure is done and they have been cleared by the doctor. However, it is possible for a small percentage of men to experience emotional problems because of it. The best way to help fight this problem is through counseling.
